THE COURSE / From the Balkans to the Middle East
The course
Crossroads of peoples and cultures, in the Balkans there is an extremely rich and varied musical tradition, almost completely ignored in Italy. The Balkan Music Eco Camp wants to provide participants with the necessary tools to travel independently in the musical world of the Near East , from the "trubaci" fanfare to the "lautari" orchestras, up to the "panigiri" groups, the endless nights of music in the summer of Aegean islands. A collective workshop where practice and oral transmission are the first two ingredients .
The repertoire will be that of traditional music from the Balkans, Romania, Turkey, Greece, Asia Minor and the Middle East. Specific technical and aesthetic issues necessary for understanding the music in question will also be discussed, such as: styles and territorial diversity, rhythms, repertoire and dances, ornamentation and articulation, specific instrumental techniques, encounter between the European tonality and the Middle Eastern modality, notions on the system of the Ottoman makams (modes), improvisation in the aesthetics of taksim, intonation and microtonality.
Who is the teacher?
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR / Federico Pascucci
Federico Pascucci is a musician who for years has dedicated himself to the study of traditional Eastern European and Asia Minor music. He lived the experience of jazz music through an intense activity of studies and concerts in Europe, living permanently in the cities of Lisbon, Amsterdam and Rome. During his career he trained at the Testaccio Music School (Rome), the Frosinone Conservatory, the Siena Jazz Foundation and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with numerous teachers (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eric Harland, George Garzone, Jim Snidero , Jeff Ballard from the USA, as well as Italian masters such as Pierluigi Quarta, Maurizio Giammarco, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu and Gianluigi Trovesi).
His artistic work includes a detailed research in the musical styles of the Balkans and Asia Minor which leads him to the collaboration with the Macedonian Gypsy orchestras (Kocani Orkestar and Sercuk Orkestar), with the Bulgarian accordionist Martin Lubenov and the creation of musical projects such as Errichetta Underground (Italy), Tugoslavic Orkestar (Portugal) and FPEast Trio (Italy / Bulgaria). Since 2006, his rich concert activity has led him to travel to the stages of international festivals and clubs with projects such as European Saxophone Ensemble (Belgium, EU), Agios Lavrentios Brass Band by Hayden Chisholm (Greece, Germany), Errichetta Underground (Italy), Malson , Kumpania Algazarra, Nelson Cascais Decateto (Portugal), WAS (Portugal, France), Animatronic Leviathan (Holland, Germany), Storytellers (Italy). In 2010 he won the "Critics Prize" in the official competition of the Italian conservatories "Premio delle Arti". In 2011 the film "The dark side of the sun" by CSHintermann for which he worked as a composer won the award for the best soundtrack at the Sulmona Film Festival. Since 2011 he has been the organizer of the Errichetta Festival, one of the most important events for traditional Eastern music in Italy.
