From September 2019 an educational-practical project dedicated to the musical traditions of the Balkans and Asia Minor was born in Rome. Crossroads of peoples and cultures, in the Balkans resides an extremely rich and varied musical tradition, in Italy almost completely ignored for reasons related to the geopolitics of the twentieth century.
With the project "Fanfare and Balkan music" an opportunity is offered to all those who want to get in touch and have direct experience with this music, through a collective workshop in which practice and oral transmission are the first two ingredients.
The workshop is aimed at providing participants with the necessary tools to be able to travel independently for the musical world of the Near East and acquire the skills to become members of an ensemble inspired by traditional Eastern European formations, from "trubaci" fanfare to orchestras " lautari ”, to the groups of the“ panigiri ”, the endless nights of music in the summer of the Aegean islands.
The group works on the construction of a collective repertoire of traditional music from the Balkans, Romania, Turkey, Greece, Asia Minor and the Middle East.
It also deals with the specific technical and aesthetic issues necessary for the total understanding of the music in question.
Between these:
Territorial styles and diversity;
Rhythms, repertoire and dances;
Ornamentation and articulation;
Specific instrumental techniques;
Encounter between the European tone and the Middle Eastern modality;
Notions on the system of Ottoman makam (modes);
Improvisation in the aesthetics of taksim;
Intonation and microtonality.
